APB'S: WHAT'S THE LATEST NEWS FROM THE PRECINCT?

MAY 5, 2008

EDP will be in Boston this coming weekend for a show at the Abbey Lounge.  The cover is $8.  Also on the bill is Apunkalypse Now and the Kawolskis. Next show is at Rehab in Manhattan (25 Avenue B in what was formerly known as the East Village) on Wednesday, June 11, an early set at 8:00.

EDP t-shirts are now available at gigs and shortly via this web site.  They're top-quality ringer t-shirts, with the cover art from NEXT STOP: BLEAKER STREET (picture to the left).  We'll be playing more out-of-town gigs this summer, so look for us.  There are tentative plans to do east coast dates with some like-minded punk bands.

MARCH 12, 2008

We are in mourning here for the imminent closing of our favorite NYC rock club, Magnetic Field, at the end of March.  Nonetheless, we'll be playing one last show there on Friday, March 21, 2008, with our best buddies, Klimpter, in order to give this fine venue a bittersweet but rousing sendoff.

A POLEMIC: The closing of The Field is a devastating loss for EDP, since it was the only club where the band felt truly at home and appreciated.  The attitude was old-school, in that the music was central--local and international bands with major street-cred among true fans of vital rock 'n roll, if not popularity with the indie-rock hipsters, who have all but ruined the subculture that once existed.  There was no "pay-to-play" nonsense or arrogant attitude of a rich kid's playground, characteristics so common in many of the remaining clubs in NYC.  Without trying to sound overly nostalgic, it is an unacknowledged truth that, despite the fact that there are more clubs and more bands in this city, there is rank superficiality everywhere in the so-called indie-rock scene that behaves just like the mainstream, with its obsession with glamour, trendy politics, and music that would have been considered AOR tripe in the 70's and 80's.  This is the white elephant of rock music, fueled by the media, the easy access of music on the Internet for people who didn't have the passion to find the scene previous to the early 90's (what did Harry Dean Stanton say in REPO MAN?  "Ordinary people--God, I hate 'em!"), and bourgeois Bohemians who have all but strip-mined the edginess of NYC.   We lament the loss of a venue so authentic to the original notion of the punk scene.  We also wish proprietor Lee Greenfeld, a very class act on all levels, the best of luck as he begins his new ventures.  He's the rarest commodity in club owners--an earnest, passionate guy in it for all the right reasons.  Let's hope that nice guys like him finish first.

JANUARY 9, 2008

Come celebrate the release of EDP's new CD, NEXT STOP: BLEAKER STREET, on January 25, 2008, at our favorite club, Magnetic Field, in Brooklyn.  Grog will flow, the band will offer up some new material, and you'll be glad you went.  Support bonafide NYC rock action!

While you're at it, stop by EDP's new Myspace site for more info on the band.  It's at www.myspace.com/edptheband.  We really could use some new friends.

DECEMBER 1, 2007

NEXT STOP: BLEAKER STREET, the new full-length CD from EDP, is now available on the Pink Frost/ Big Takeover record label out of Brooklyn, an imprint that's affiliated with the long-running music magazine THE BIG TAKEOVER and that previously released  CD's by Guided By Voices guitarist Doug Gillard and Last Burning Embers.  It's widely distributed exclusively by Redeye and can be purchased at numerous online outlets, from Amazon and CD Universe to J&R Music and even Target.  Check out this recent review.

MP3's can be heard here.

AUGUST 8, 2007

We're at it again this coming Saturday at Magnetic Field in Brooklyn, one of our favorite venues and a terrific place to hang in general.  Great beers on tap, a comfortable and happening atmosphere, and quality rock 'n roll--nothing more needed for a night out.

JULY 2, 2007

New band photos have been added to the mugshots page.  We'll be doing extensive updates here as the release date of the CD approaches, so check back frequently.

On a tangential note, EDP's bassist has produced a new CD of raucous punk and post-punk covers by his students at a Newark, NJ, high school who go by the name of the Non-Linear Thinkers.  It's a full-length effort on Pink Frost/ Big Takeover Records, and it's available from the Big Takeover store shortly.

JANUARY 26, 2007

BIG NEWS: EDP's new CD, entitled NEXT STOP: BLEAKER STREET, is completely finished and should be released in the next few months or so.  Extensive details will follow.  In the meantime, the band will return to Hank's Saloon on Friday, February 2, 2007.  See the June 5 APB below for directions and details.

AUGUST 21, 2006

There are far too many lackluster clubs, bars, and lounges in NYC these days, and nightlife has been enfeebled by yuppie and hipster hegemony.  However, there are still a few excellent venues, and EDP will be playing one of their favorites, Magnetic Field in Brooklyn Heights, on Friday, September 1, 2006.  Partners in crime Klimpter will join them, we're happy to report.  Rock action is always a remedy for those lamenting the waning days of summer.

JUNE 5, 2006

EDP are back at one of their favorite venues, Hank's Saloon, this coming Saturday, June 10. We're preparing for the release of our new LP, which is now finished. Admission is free, showtime is around 9:30, and there aren't many better places to drink in NYC. Plus there's a free barbecue outside on the sidewalk. How can you go wrong?

(HANK'S SALOON IS LOCATED AT 46 THIRD AVE. BROOKLYN. IF COMING BY TRAIN, YOUR OPTIONS ARE MYRIAD: TAKE EITHER THE 2,3,4,5,B,D,M,N,Q, OR R TO ATLANTIC AVE./PACIFIC STREET STATION. IF TRAVELING BY CAR TAKE THE BQE TO THE ATLANTIC AVE. EXIT--YOU CAN ONLY GO ONE WAY, AND HANK'S WILL BE ON YOUR RIGHT A FEW BLOCKS UP. EITHER WAY, IT'S A REASONABLE TREK.)

MARCH 14, 2006

St. Patrick's Day is often amateur hour in NYC, not unlike New Year's Eve and the night before Thanksgiving. Nonetheless, exceptions need to be made, and, in this case, a double-bill on Pᤲaig Sona Daoibh (that's March 17 in Gaelic, for the uninitiated) featuring EDP and their buddies Klimpter at ace Brooklyn Heights club Magnetic Fields is reason enough. The club is easy to reach via subway (see their web site for directions), and it has more rock 'n roll credibility than most lame venues in Manhattan these days. The weekend beckons...please join EDP as we prepare to release our new CD in a few months. Quality rock action with major sweat is assured.

MARCH 6, 2006

Further honing their live set, EDP will do their now-seemingly-monthly slot at Hank's Saloon this coming Thursday, March 9. Info is below--Hank's is one of the few music venues left in the Rotten Apple that doesn't reek of yuppie/hipster scum. Be there...

JANUARY 23, 2006

Thanks to all the punters who offered support at Hank's Saloon last week, for our money the best bar to play in NYC. Despite some technical difficulties, EDP received a stellar response from an enthusiastic audience. We'll be hitting the stage again this coming Saturday night, January 28, at The Underscore, 1733 1st Ave. near 90th St on the Upper East Side. We'll be sharing the bill with our friends Klimpter, who boast a fine old-school punk sound and attitude and shouldn't be missed.

JANUARY 15, 2006

EDP enjoyed themselves so much when they played Hank's Saloon last month that they'll be there again this coming Thursday, January 18. Showtime is 9:00, so the excuse that it's a weeknight will not suffice. See the December 5, 2005, note below for info on and directions to Hank's, a terrific place to hang and see a gig. It's one of the band's favorite venues right now, a place very suited to our sound and m.o.

DECEMBER 5, 2005

LAST MINUTE SHOW ADDED: TREAT YOURSELVES TO AN EARLY CHRISTMAS GIFT OF MOD-NIFICENT ROCK AND ROLL AS EDP SHARES THE BILL WITH TWO FAB BANDS THIS SATURDAY NIGHT AT HANK'S SALOON IN BEAUTIFUL DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN. THE BEER IS CHEAP AND THE ADMISSION IS FREE.

9:00 SUSAN HURTUK
10:00 EDP
11:00 KLIMPTER

HANK'S SALOON IS LOCATED AT 46 THIRD AVE. BROOKLYN. IF COMING BY TRAIN, YOUR OPTIONS ARE MYRIAD: TAKE EITHER THE 2,3,4,5,B,D,M,N,Q, OR R TO ATLANTIC AVE./PACIFIC STREET STATION. IF TRAVELING BY SLED TAKE THE BQE TO ATLANTIC AVE. EXIT.

AUGUST 7, 2005

EDP are looking forward to venturing outside of the Manhattan/ Brooklyn club nexus with a gig this coming Friday, August 12, at the Staten Island Music Festival. It's a two-day showcase of local talent at The Real McCoy, 76 Bay Street, Staten Island, a mere three blocks from the SI Ferry. EDP will hit the stage around 10:00 with a special guest drummer, Paul Corradi--some might know him by another name. And remember: the ferry, which departs on a decent schedule, is free in both directions (there's also food and booze available on board). There are many less pleasant ways to spend a summer evening than catching a harbor breeze departing from Manhattan.

JULY 21, 2005

Gig this coming Saturday night, July 23, at The Underscore, 1733 1st Ave. near 90th St. EDP hit the stage around 10:30 or so. See you there.

JUNE 27, 2005

After the farce of a show at Don Hill's, where EDP were permitted to play a pitiful four songs (our apologies to the punters who were swindled into paying for the gig--the NYC rock club scene is scandalous on many levels),the band will offer a full-set at The Underscore, downstairs at 1733 1st Avenue near 90th Street on Saturday night, July 23, 2005.

MAY 5, 2005

It's finally gig-time again after another layoff. Friday, May 13, 2005, all non-triskaidekaphobics will be at The Underscore, downstairs at 1733 1st Avenue near 90th Street on the venerable Upper East Side (ahem!) for some tunes incongruent with the neighborhood. EDP headline around 10:30 at this keen new venue. For more info, call 212-876-0203.

JANUARY 9, 2005

Next rock action is the first for the new year at a new venue on Manhattan's Upper East Side. The gig is this coming Friday, January 14, 2005, at The Underscore, located downstairs at 1733 1st Avenue near 90th Street--it's appropriately below a tavern. For more info, call 212-876-0203. EDP are hitting the stage c. 10:30, admission is cheap, and you can most likely sleep in the next day.

OCTOBER 22, 2004

EDP are ready for some rock action after a late summer/early fall layoff. They'll be reemerging this coming Thursday for a free, low-key gig again at Desmond's Tavern, 433 Park Avenue South at 29th Street, Manhattan (take the 6 train to 28th Street). Set time is 9:00, so it should be no problem for those who need to hit the work grind early next morning. After the manic reaction at their last gig at The Hook in Brooklyn (a boisterous call for an encore and a generally sweat-soaked set of highest energy yet), the heat at this one ought to offer a quick remedy to the sleepy autumn weather.

JULY 18, 2004

It's feast or famine here at The Precinct, as EDP hits the stage again on Saturday, July 24, 2004, at ace club The Hook, located at 18 Commerce Street in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn. It's a mod/power pop night of sorts featuring the Punch Line, Versus the Sun, and Her. EDP hit the stage at 10:00 PM. Information and directions are readily available on The Hook's web site.

JULY 10, 2004

Next Saturday night, July 17. 2004, will see the first live appearance of EDP since recording the new LP, indeed the first appearance in over a year. The gig is at Desmond's Tavern, 433 Park Avenue South at 29th Street, Manhattan (take the 6 train to 28th Street). We don't know the set time as of yet, but it's late enough that those attending the VILLAGE VOICE Siren Music Festival in Coney Island will be able to see Mission of Burma there and still make the EDP show with plenty of time to spare. Admission will be quite cheap, so stop by for some summertime rock action.

JUNE 1, 2004

After a bit of a layoff, EDP will finally reappear on the live circuit, debuting new material from their recently recorded new LP on Saturday, July 17, 2004, at Desmond's Tavern, 433 Park Ave. South (between 29th & 30th St.) in Manhattan. Admission is going to be cheap, good beer flows from the taps, and it's all a good excuse to celebrate the band's return. More details later--we hope to see you there.

DECEMBER 30, 2003

As 2004 approaches, there's much excitement at THE PRECINCT. EDP have finished their new full-length LP, as yet untitled, and are set to resurface in a major way, after several months of recording, mixing, and mastering. The record will be shopped to labels after the new year, and we'll have all pertinent fodder concerning its release here. In the meantime, four MP3's of excerpts from the LP have been posted on the scanner for your enjoyment--be sure to send some testimony to THE PRECINCT.

AUGUST 19, 2003

EDP will be at Excello Studio in Brooklyn over the course of the next few weeks to record a full-length LP. They'll be working with engineer Jason Marcucci, so the sound is sure to be punchy. MP3 previews will be posted here as soon as they are available.

JULY 29, 2003

New photos are now posted on the mugshots page.

JULY 16, 2003

Hot off their last set in Brooklyn, EDP will grace that borough with their charm once again on Monday, July 28, 2003, at Great Lakes, 284 Fifth Avenue at 1st Street in Park Slope--as ace a bar as this city offers (dig the superb jukebox with the likes of Radio Birdman!). Showtime is at an early 8:30, so those who must rise to the grind the next morning have no excuses. Call the club for more info at 718-499-3710.

JUNE 25, 2003:

Several MP3's are now available on the scanner for your enjoyment. Take a listen and prepare yourself for EDP's appearance at Freddy's Backroom this coming Friday (details below).

JUNE 20, 2003:

Next EDP show will be at Freddy's Backroom, 485 Dean Street in Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY, USA, on Friday, June 27, 2003. The action starts at 10:30, and admission is entirely free. You've nothing to lose and everything to gain. Easy access to the club is had via the 2/4/5 lines on the subway. Summer will have started, so you need a rock 'n roll fix.
